Good Morning America - Shinzou Egutte (english translation)

You can really tell that they used to be an emo band sometimes.

心臓抉って / Gouging Out My Heart*

Music and Lyrics: Shingo Kanehiro

Today again,
I’m searching
Searching for the place where I belong

I still want to be needed by someone, but
No matter how many times I change*, it’s affecting me
The wind in this city is gouging out my heart

It’s gouging out my heart
Blowing through me
I’ve even started to get used to the feeling
It’s gouging out my heart
The world that I’ve projected my heart out into
Has left me feeling even more alone

Even the crows digging through the trash that have divided up this city seem to be saying,
“I wish people like you’d just die and become food for me”
Their mocking gaze is gouging out my heart

It’s gouging out my heart
Piercing through me
I’ve even started to get used to the feeling
If it’s going to gouge out my heart,
Then hey, at least show me what it’s like to feel love in my heart for once***

Everyone is experiencing the same thing
Swinging back and forth from despair to hope
Even though I know that it’s just a kind of paper mache****,
Somehow I end up forgetting
It’s so close that I can’t see it,
But today as well, I’m living because of someone else’s support

It’s gouging out my heart

It’s gouging out my heart
This common love wets my cheek and changes into tears
If it’s going to gouge out my heart,
Then hey, show me what it’s like to feel love in my heart again and again

Notes:
*It looks like you can read “egutte” literally as “gouge/hollow/dig out” or figuratively as “to cause emotional pain”, but I like “gouging out my heart” because it sounds extra dramatic - plus there’s a more painful connotation than digging. Doesn’t sound as good if you say “This city hurts my heart”.
**He just says “change”, I’m not sure if he means no matter how he changes himself or if he means changing partners, like no matter how many people he tries to get close to it doesn’t work out
***Not sure about this line
****Not sure if I’m reading this wrong, but maybe recovering from the bad emotions is like paper mache-ing over them?
